Hinamatsuri

Hinamatsuri is celebrated each year on March 3rd. It is also called Doll’s Day or Girl’s Day. It is a special day for girls hence the name. Traditional sweets and drinks prepared on this day include Shirozake, Hishimochi, Hinaarare and Chirashizushi. Families with a daughter place a Hina doll set (Hina ningyo in Japanese) in their home. After the end of the festival, they have to take down the dolls immediately. Legend has it that leaving the dolls displayed past March 4th results in a late marriage for the daughter. The custom of displaying dolls began in the Heian period. The picture shows a typical frame with dolls with the Emperor and Empress doll at the top. These dolls are referred to as Odairi-sama and Ohina-sama respectively.

Have a lovely Hinamatsuri Day !
