Translator in “Round One”

Game Center Fukuoka

I want to tell you a little bit about my former travel experiences in Japan.

About two years ago I was made a “translator” for a few minutes.

So what happened? A few friends and I went to “Round One”, an entertaining complex with many sport facilities, video games and Karaoke. As we went in the evening we were asked by the staff if we are adults, for that minors had to leave the complex around 9 o c’lock if they are not accompanied by their parents. So because we are foreigners the staff would ask us in English, but as soon as they noticed that we could speak Japanese, too, they didn’t ask us again.

However, one male staff suddenly came to me and ask me to translate. There where two quite young looking Americans boys. So I translated for the staff: “How old are you?” The answer: “15”. “Are you accompanied by your parents?” -“No”. Then I should politely asked them to leave because it was not allowed to stay here after 9 o’clock. After this my small job as a “translator” was done. The staff was happy and thanked me.

It was quite a strange experience for me. But at least the staff trusted me to that extend that they would even ask me to translate, because they didn’t know what else to do. This made me happy.
