Johanna from Germany gives us a summary of her design internship at Agent Plus in Fukuoka.
Why do you like Japan?
I am fascinated by the Japanese art style owing to my illustration and graphic design major. It is great to be able to see the difference between German and Japanese methods.
How do you like Fukuoka and what do you recommend others to do here?
I love Fukuoka. It is a big city but still feels like Japan without the number of foreigners compared to Tokyo. You can do so many things in a very condensed area—go to the ocean, visit rural towns and islands, and so much more.
Why did you choose Asahi School?
My travel agency organized the program for me, and I was not disappointed.
Why have you decided to do your internship in Japan?
I need to do a six-month internship for my studies. Japan was my first choice because I wanted to go abroad and because I am interested in Japanese art styles and designs.
How long is the internship? What are your working hours?
As I have said, I am doing the internship for six months. My working hours are Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
What are your main tasks at Agent Plus?
I come up with graphic designs—we need to prepare four different samples for each design—and I clean pictures. Occasionally, I also do short translations from Japanese to English.
What do you like the most about your internship?
Everyone at the office is very nice and tries to talk with me as often as possible. Although it is difficult at times when I do not understand, I really the challenge, and the atmosphere is very pleasant.
Were there any (cultural) problems?
I did not have any major problems. I do not understand my colleagues from time to time, but those situations are cleared up very quickly.
Do you have any advice for people who want to do an internship in Japan?
Study the language and do not be afraid to speak Japanese whenever you can. People will understand you most of the time. You should also be aware of the different working environment. It can differ quite a bit from other countries.
