Last Saturday, the so-called Hakata Tomyo Watching was celebrated at various places in Hakata District, Fukuoka.
Taken place for the 21st time, Hakata Tomyo Watching is famous for its thousands of self-made lanterns installed especially at shrines, temples and other public places. Now organized by the Hakata Urban Renewal Council, this festival is based on the “Sentomyosai”, a festival celebrated 300 years ago in the same area.
The flames of the lanterns are believed to ease the pain in the hearts of the people and give the people of Hakata new power.
The entrance is free. The next Hakata Tomyo Watching will be held next year in October.
